Rome, Dec 14 (IANS) An Italian author belonging to a far-right political group killed himself after gunning down two Senegalese traders and injuring three in Florence, a media report said.

The attacker, identified as Gianluca Casseri, reportedly opened fire at vendors in a street market north of the historic city centre Tuesday with a large Magnum revolver handgun, killing two of them and wounding a third, according to ANSA news agency.

He later drove to a market in the city centre where he wounded two more Senegalese people, reported Xinhua.

He killed himself after being surrounded by the police in an underground parking lot.

According to ANSA, Casseri was a published author belonging to a far-right political group.

Around 600 Senegalese marched in Florence later Tuesday after the incident, proclaiming the shooting was an act of racism.

“Do not tell us that this man was only a crazy because, if he was, he would have killed both blacks and whites,” some of them shouted.

In a statement, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano expressed his “profound shock and sorrow”.

“The commitment of all political authorities and civil society to fight all forms of intolerance … is increasingly urgent,” the statement said.
