London, Dec 17 (IANS) A football fan has been jailed in Britain for stealing an on-call ambulance from outside a heart attack patient’s house.

After attending the England international against Spain at Wembley stadium in November with family and friends, Tyrone Weir, 35, had been drinking heavily and got involved in an altercation with his friends. He found himself in London with no money or mobile phone and unable to return to Chelmsford, Essex city, the Daily Mail reported.

Weir made his way across London to Hackney, a borough, where he noticed the ambulance which was on a 999 call.

As paramedics were inside the house dealing with a patient suffering from a suspected heart attack at about 3 a.m., Weir jumped into the ambulance and drove himself home more than 30 miles away.

Police used the vehicle’s in-built tracker to trace Weir to his Essex home. At his house, police found the ambulance parked in the road outside.

He was charged with a string of offences including taking a vehicle without consent, failing to provide a specimen of breath, driving without insurance and being in possession of cannabis.

Appearing at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court, Weir admitted to all four charges and he was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison.
