Malaysian tomboys say fatwa wont affect their lifestyle

Kuala Lumpur, Nov 10 (ANI): Tomboys in Malaysia have denounced the fatwa forbidding their tomboyish behaviour, insisting that it will not change their lifestyle.

Malaysias top Islamic body had issued an edict by the National Fatwa Council banning tomboys, saying that girls who act unlady-like violate the tenets of Islam.

An increasing number of Malaysian girls behave like tomboys, and some of them engage in homosexuality.

Under the edict girls cannot sport short hair and dress, walk and act like boys.

A tomboy named Win sneered away from the edict, and said that it would not affect their lifestyle.

Surely I will not be arrested if I dress like a man or when I am eating out with other girls? The Star Online quoted her as telling Metro Ahad.

The ban is only on paper as it will be difficult for the authorities to determine if a girl is a tomboy, she added.

Win said that most of them did not commit wrongful acts.

We just want to have fun, but I dont deny there are some who go overboard and fall in love and have lesbian relationships, she said.

Asni, 25, said she was amused by the fatwa against tomboys, adding that since becoming a man she had led a happier life, falling in love and living with her female friend.

Right now I do not want to know (about the ban), she said.

I know we are choosing the wrong path. But I cannot change the way I have always felt, she added. (ANI)
