Malaysian Hindus celebrate Tamil New Year
April 15th, 2010 - 2:14 pm ICT by ANIKuala Lumpur, Apr 15(ANI): Malaysian Hindus celebrated the Tamil New Year or ‘Varisha Piraippu’ by gathering at temples across the country to seek blessings.
Prayers were held in temples after considering the astrological positions of the stars and planets to match the Hindu calendar.
Jeyenderan R., a businessman from Port Klang, said the day has always been an occasion to thank God for the blessings received.
“I always pray for peace, prosperity and goodwill,” The Star quoted Jeyenderan, as saying.
As part of the celebrations, Jeyenderan and his workers also set up tents to offer vegetarian food to devotees at the Korthumalai Vinayagar temple in Jalan Pudu Lama.
“I have been doing this for four years. It is my way of giving back to society a little of what I have earned,” he added.
Varisha Piraippu is observed with holy rituals, as Lord Brahma is believed to have begun his divine work on the day, which is observed on the first day of the Tamil month of Chithirai. (ANI)
