Malay Indian mom waits for kids to be declared HindusApril 24th, 2009 - 3:18 pm ICT by ANI
Petaling Jaya, Apr 24 (ANI): Indra Ghandhi, whose husband converted himself and their three children to Islam, hopes that Malaysian Cabinet’s decision on conversion will apply to her.
“I am not sure whether what was announced will work. I won’t believe it until their names have been changed back to what they used to be and they are declared Hindus,” she said on Thursday.
Indra said she would also continue with legal action and file a case at the Ipoh High Court today to gain custody of her children.
On March 31, Indra’s husband, who converted to Islam on March 11, allegedly stormed into their house and took the birth certificates of their three children while also seizing the youngest child.
K. Patmanathan, now known as Mohd Ridzuan Abdullah, then changed all his three children’s religion using the birth certificates without the children’s presence, The Star reported.
Ridzuan has since been trying to take custody of his two children, Tevi Darsiny, 12, and Karan Dinish, 11.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet has decided that children be raised in the “common religion at the time of marriage” should one of their parents convert.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Abd Aziz said a spouse who had converted into Islam would also have to fulfil his or her marriage responsibilities and sort out issues according to civil marriage laws.
“Religion should not be used as a tool to escape marriage responsibilities. Conversion is not grounds for automatic dissolution of a marriage,” he told a press conference at Parliament House yesterday.
Nazri said the principles would apply to any disputes resulting from conversion, not necessarily just for conversions to Islam.
He said the effects of conversion should apply from the day of conversion. “It was decided that conversion is not retrospective. Past acts should be resolved under the relevant civil laws. They should come clean as a convert,” Nazri said.
Nazri said religious conversion must come with the innocent party being protected from being victimised besides giving protection under the new religion to the convert. (ANI)
