Magnitude-8.3 quake rocks Chile
February 27th, 2010 - 4:03 pm ICT by IANSWashington, Feb 27 (DPA) A magnitude-8.3 earthquake struck Saturday near Chile’s second-largest city, Concepcion, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake hit at 3:34 A.M. (1204 IST) in the Pacific, 90 km north-north-east of Concepcion in central Chile or 320 km south-west of Santiago, the agency said. It occurred at a depth of 60 km.
A tsunami warning was issued for Chile’s entire coast as well as for its northern neighbour, Peru.
The agency downgraded the magnitude from an earlier estimate of 8.5.
Reports of casualties or damage were not immediately available, but CNN said electricity had gone out in Santiago.
