Magnitude-6.9 quake hits Solomon Islands
April 23rd, 2011 - 4:29 pm ICT by IANSSydney, April 23 (IANS) An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale jolted Solomon Islands at 0416 GMT Saturday, the US Geological Survey said.
According to the USGS, no tsunami warning was issued for the strong earthquake, which struck just after 3.16 p.m. local time Saturday. So far no casualty or damage has been reported.
The quake’s epicentre, with a depth of 81.6 km, was initially determined to be at 10.4450 degrees south latitude and 161.4199 degrees east longitude.
The quake was centered 76 km west of Kira Kira, San Cristobal, and 171 km southeast of the capital Honiara, Solomon Islands.
Solomon Islands is a sovereign state in Oceania, east of Papua New Guinea consisting of nearly one thousand islands.
