Macallan 50th anniversary whiskey sells for record 11,750 pounds
August 7th, 2009 - 4:48 pm ICT by ANIGlasgow (England), Aug. 7 (ANI): McTear’s Auctioneers in Glasgow have sold a Macallan 50th anniversary bottle of whiskey for a record 11,750 pounds, including a buyer’s premium of 17.5 per cent.
The whiskey was distilled more than 80 years ago and has become the most expensive spirit of its type to be sold at auction, The Daily Express reports.
The bottle contains whisky from three casks distilled between 1926 and 1928, and was bottled 50 years later in 1978.
It was sold to a private collector in California.
The bottle was part of an auction of collectible whiskies that raised almost 155,000 pounds. Other top lots included a 60-year-old Royal Brackla that was sold for 3,800 pounds and a limited edition 1965 bottle of Ardbeg, which sold for 3,000 pounds. (ANI)
