Madrid, July 5 (DPA) French football champions Lyon have announced the sale of goalkeeper Gregory Coupet to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid. Atletico will pay around 1.5 million euros ($2.37 million) for the 36 year-old, who was first choice for France at Euro 2008.
Coupet was keen to leave Lyon, despite being under contract until 2010, and was even threatening to retire if the club did not let him leave for Spain.
He helped Lyon to win a record seven successive French league titles, from 2002 to 2008.
On Thursday Atletico, who finished fourth in La Liga last season, clinched the signing of French striker Florent Sinama Pongolle from Recreativo Huelva.
