Lonnie Franklin Jr. arrested in the ‘Grim Sleeper’ case
July 8th, 2010 - 8:36 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLos Angeles, July 8 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Lonnie Franklin Jr. who is suspected of killing 10 people and who was on the run for more than twenty years has finally been arrested.
Police arrested the former police mechanic on Wednesday after the police used his sons DNA to track him down.
The 57 year old Lonnie Franklin has been charged with 10 counts of murder and another count of attempted murder. The authorities have also charged him with special circumstance multiple murders. If found guilty, Lonnie could face the death sentence.
The murders took place between the period of 1985 and 2007. The attacks targeted young black women. His victims included only one man.
Lonnie Franklin evaded the police for a very long time. Authorities named the evasive attacker “Grim Sleeper” after he took a 14-year break from the murders from 1988 to 2002.
However authorities used a technique called familial DNA search after they arrested Lonnie’s son and did DNA profiling on him. After the results came in, authorities compared his DNA with the DNA found at the crime scene.
The authorities did DNA testing on all the family members and Lonnie’s DNA was found to match the one found at the crime scene.
