London church to pay tribute to John Lenon
May 13th, 2009 - 12:26 am ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )London, May 12 (IANS) Late Beatle legend John Lenon will be honoured in his native Liverpool by bell ringers who will perform his peace anthem “Imagine” in the city’s cathedral.
Contactmusic.com reprots that church officials have given the go ahead for the performance despite the track featuring the controversial line, “Imagine there’s no heaven”.
“Allowing ‘Imagine…’ to be pealed on our bells does not mean we agree with the song’s lyrics. We recognise its power to make us think. As a cathedral, we do not shrink from debate. We recognise the existence of other world views,” said a church spokesperson.
The performance has also won the approval of Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono, who told the BBC that the idea was “so beautiful, it made me choke up”.
Lennon was murdered outside his New York apartment he shared with Ono in 1980.
