Rio de Janeiro, May 29 (Xinhua) Playing in front of their home crowd Cruzeiro scored a 2-1 win over Sao Paulo in their first leg of the quarter-finals in this year’s Libertadores Cup.
The victory Wednesday night broke the team’s five-year losing streak while at home against Sao Paulo.

Cruzeiro got on the board first in the 45th minute when Gerson Magrao sent a corner kick directly to Leonardo Silva, who out-jumped the Sao Paulo defenders and led his team into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Sao Paulo scored their only goal in the 57th minute. The Cruzeiro goalkeeper was able to block Dagoberto’s header, but on the rebound, Sao Paulo’s Washington appeared to shoot the ball towards the goal. The ball deflected off a defensive player and found its way into the home team’s net.

Cruzeiro regained the lead in the 65th minute. Off a touch-and-go, Ze Carlos took a shot from well outside the penalty box. Sao Paulo’s intern goalie, Denis, was able to get a hand on the ball, but the momentum and force was too much as the ball hit the goalpost and then went into the net.

Both the Brazilian teams will have three weeks off before they meet again in the return leg of the Libertadores Cup quarter-finals.

On June 17, Sao Paulo will host Cruzeiro at the Morumbi stadium. Sao Paulo hopes to pull off a 1-0 score, just enough to advance to the semifinals. Cruzeiro hopes for a tie in order to advance.
