Lebanese opposition confirms withdrawal from BeirutMay 11th, 2008 - 12:45 am ICT by admin
Beirut, May 10 (Xinhua) Lebanese opposition MP Ali Hasan Khalil confirmed Saturday that Hezbollah would withdraw gunmen from Beirut, but accused Prime Minister Fouad Seniora of carrying out a coup against the resistance. The opposition will withdraw its gunmen from Beirut and end military manifestation, while maintaining civil disobedience, Khalil said in a press conference.
“The two government decisions have been issued and sent by Seniora to the UN,” Khalil said, calling the prime minister to withdraw the decisions.
The two government decisions, ceasing Hezbollah-run phone network, and removing airport security chief Wakic Skqaier from his post for alleged links to Hezbollah, have triggered unrest and fierce clashes in the country for four days now, leaving at least 24 people dead and more than 80 wounded.
Khalil is a member of Speaker Nabih Berri’s parliamentary block.
