Knife used in Indian’s fatal stabbing in New Zealand found
February 1st, 2010 - 1:40 pm ICT by IANSWellington, Feb 1 (IANS) The knife used in a “frenzied attack” that left an Indian taxi driver dead in New Zealand has been found, police said Monday.
Auckland taxi driver Hiren Mohini, 39, was killed early Sunday. Mohini’s taxi collided with a tree in Mount Eden at about 1.20 a.m. after he was allegedly stabbed by a passenger.
Police said that a knife has been found at the scene and thirty investigators were hunting for the assailant, New Zealand Herald reported.
Detective Senior Sergeant Hywel Jones said the knife was being forensically examined.
He said Mohini died at the scene as the result of multiple stab wounds.
“It was a frenzied attack.”
He went on to say that “there are a large number of witnesses to interview not only from the street where the murder happened but also other locations… where a male suspect is believed to have hired the cab driven by the deceased.”
“We are accessing security surveillance footage from a number of locations and working on some strong leads that will assist us to locate the killer. This is a complex murder investigation,” he was quoted as saying.
Mohini leaves a wife and two daughters, aged five and two.
Auckland Co-operative Taxi Society chairman Ian Graham Sunday told New Zealand Herald that Mohini had been with the company for three years and added they were “deeply saddened by the tragic case”.
“All our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. The company is in shock and anger that a young family man, working hard to provide for his family has been taken in such a senseless act of violence.
“He was a very quiet, reserved gentleman. A true family man, loved his family, and all he was doing was going about trying to earn an honest living doing a public service,” Graham was quoted as saying.
