Kiwi crash driver who had 24 beers says he doesn’t have drinking problem
January 25th, 2011 - 5:52 pm ICT by ANIWellington, Jan 25 (ANI): An 18-year-old Kiwi fencer who drove a ute over a bank near Ruby Bay says he does not have a drinking problem despite downing two dozen beers the night before he crashed.
Luke Joseph Jacobsen from Pohara admitted in the Nelson District Court yesterday a charge of drink driving and careless driving, reports Stuff.co.nz.
The charges relate to a crash on November 21 in which Jacobsen lost control of a ute and crashed over a bank into a group of trees on Stafford Dr, Ruby Bay.
All four people in the car, including Jacobsen, were taken to hospital and discharged the next day.
Lawyer Wayne Jones said the ute Jacobsen was driving had tyres that were more suited to off-road driving and did not perform well in the wet weather.
Jacobsen told him he did not have a drinking problem. He did not drink during the week and rarely binged.
On the night before the crash he had drunk 24 cans of beer and gone to bed at 6am. He had begun drinking at 2pm on the day of the crash. (ANI)
