Kenya is ‘up and running again’, Odinga to investorsJune 5th, 2008 - 9:51 pm ICT by IANS
Cape Town, June 5 (DPA) Kenya’s economy is “up and running again”, Prime Minister Raila Odinga told business and political leaders meeting at the World Economic Forum on Africa in Cape Town Thursday. “We come to announce that Kenya is up and running again,” Odinga told a press conference, announcing the launch of Kenya’s Vision 2030 programme designed to boost economic growth to 12 percent by 2012.
“What we have been through has left us much more united than before,” he said.
Kenya’s economy was rocked by a wave of ethnic-based violence in the wake of disputed December presidential polls, in which over 1,000 people were killed, denting the country’s image of stability.
After seven percent growth in 2007 Kenya’s economy is forecast to slow to 4.5 percent this year.
Vision 2030 aims to boost investment in infrastructure, telecommunications, tourism and other sectors as well as transform the capital Nairobi into a metropolis, Odinga said.
