Karachi building collapse toll rises to 16
August 6th, 2011 - 10:26 am ICT by IANSIslamabad, Aug 6 (IANS) The toll in Karachi building collapse, which occurred Thursday in Pakistan, risen to 16 after four more bodies were recovered Saturday while 24 people still remained missing, Geo News reported.
Rescue teams were looking for survivors trapped under the rubble of the collapsed five-storey building on the third consecutive day in Karachi’s Lyari town.
Three owners of the building have been apprehended while three surrounding buildings have also been evacuated, said deputy commissioner (South) Mustafa Jamal Qazi.
Two temporary camps have been set up for the evacuees of the said three buildings, he said.
President Asif Ali Zardari has announced compensation for the affectees and a decision in this regard would be made soon, he added.
