Kalamandalam Hemalatha Creates Guinness Record For Longest Dance!

1-7-2011_8592_l_uKochi, Jan 9, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Kalamandalam Hemalatha, a famous Mohiniyattam exponent and danseuse has done India proud by making entry to the coveted Guinness Book of World Record. She now holds the record for performing the longest dance marathon. The skilled dancer beat the earlier record set by Vettikotta Yadagiri of Hyderabad. Kalamandalam Hemalatha staged her incredible 123-hour performance in September last year in Thrissur. The certificate awarded to her goes “the longest marathon by an individual was 123 hours and 15 minutes achieved by Kalamandalam Hemalatha.”

The talented dancer said after making the record that she looks at the feat as something more than a personal achievement. She added that with her making way in the famous Guinness Book of World Record, Mohiniyattam, Kerala’s ancient and traditional dance form will get recognition. She had to face the allegations of banking on one of the rich and elegant dance form of Kerala. However, she stood by her faith in her effort and it paid off. She fell ill after her first attempt at creating the record but hit the target on sophomore attempt. The noted danseuse runs a Thrissur based dance school now. For practicing prior to her attempt at the dance marathon, the lady ran for 45 kilometers and danced for 10 hours per day. It was quite hard on her but the fruits are worth the labor!

The 37-year-old lady who is a mother as well, is elated and has plans to instill interest in young dancers about this form of dance. Amarilis Whitty, a Guinness World Records official affirmed the record set by the dancer. The certificate came to Kalamandalam Hemalatha a few days back.
