Kuwait, Feb 16 (IANS) India’s Joshna Chinappa upset third seed Sharon Wee of Malaysia to storm into the women’s semi-finals of the Asian Squash Championships here. Joshna is India’s only hope in the tournament now with Sourav Ghosal and Siddharth Suchde crashing out in the quarterfinals.
Lower seeded Joshna stunned Wee 9-5, 4-9, 9-7, 9-5, in 55 minutes. She will now face second seed Rebecca Chiu of Hong Kong, who beat Malaysia’s Delia Arnold 9-7, 9-4, 9-1 in just 33 minutes.
In the other women’s semi-final, Nicol David of Malyasia will meet Christina Mak of Hong Kong.
In the men’s quarterfinals, Ghosal frittered a one-game lead to go down 10-8, 4-9, 1-9, 3-9, to local favourite Abdullah Kh. Al Mezayen, while Suchde went down fighting 2-9, 3-9, 10-8, 2-9, to second seed Ong Beng Hee in a thrilling hour-long contest.
Abdullah plays Ong Beng in one semi-final, while Shahid Zaman of Pakistan takes on Mohd Azlan Iskandar of Malaysia in the other.
