Jewellery stolen from Hindu temples recovered in Bangladesh
February 19th, 2011 - 6:30 pm ICT by IANSDhaka, Feb 19 (IANS) Bangladesh authorities have arrested eight people and recovered gold and silver jewellery stolen from Hindu temples in and around the national capital. The suspects, members of a gang, were arrested in connection with the burglaries committed at the historic Dhakeswari and Jay Kali temples Jan 9 and Feb 2, respectively.
Police also recovered gold ornaments, a rickshaw used to carry the stolen goods and other valuables from the suspected burglars, the New Age newspaper reported Saturday.
The deputy commissioner (south) of detective branch of police, Mohammad Moniruzzaman, told media that the police were convinced that the priests and other functionaries of the temples were not involved in the burglaries.
He said that the police were trying to track down the other members of the gang.
On Jan 9, burglars took away gold and silver ornaments that adorned the idol of goddess Durga, charity boxes and around 50,000 taka (about $5,500) in cash from the vault of Dhakeswari temple.
On Feb 2, unidentified miscreants looted gold ornaments and cash from Jay Kali temple in Sutrapur area, just 23 days after the Dhakeshwari temple heist.
Hindus, who account for about nine percent of the country’s total population, are the largest religious minority in Bangladesh.
