Jean-Bertrand Aristide returns to Haiti after a 7-years exile
March 19th, 2011 - 2:17 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattPort-au-Prince, Mar 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Jean-Bertrand Asistide has returned to Haiti today after a 7-years exile. Much to the chagrin of US authorities who wanted him to stay away from the earthquake ravaged country, he made his way back to the country today.
The presidential elections are going to be held on Sunday that would determine whether pop singer Michel Martelly or former first lady Mirlande Manigat would grace the office of the President. And Jean-Bertrand arrived in the country just to time to know who would be the next president of the country that was ravaged by a massive earthquake last year.
Jean was elected the president of the country a couple of times, but he had to bow to pressure from the United States and leave the country in favor of South Africa in 2004. However he now insists that he is not back in his home land because he is interested in politics but rather he is back in Haiti because he wants to work there on the educational front.
However US authorities are very worried about his sudden return coupled with the timing of the upcoming Presidential elections. They fear that his presence in the country might prove disastrous for the nation which is struggling to stand up on its feet.
