Japanese Government criticizes nuke plant operator for lacking transparency

Tokyo, Mar. 27 (ANI): The Japanese Government has criticized the operator of radiation-leaking nuclear plant for lack of transparency and also for failure to protect the workers.

Government has revealed a series of missteps by the operator of nuclear plant that include sending workers in without protective footwear in its efforts to control crisis.

Government spokesman Yukio Edano has urged Tokyo Electric Power Company to be more transparent, after two workers at Fukushima Daiichi plant suffered skin burns when they stepped in water that was 10,000 times more radioactive than levels normally found near the reactors.

“We strongly urge TEPCO to provide information to the government more promptly,” The Daily Star quoted Edano, as saying.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) said TEPCO was aware about high radiation at one of the plant’s six units before the accident.

Agency also pointed out that two workers at the nuclear plant were injured because of wearing boots that were not enough to protect their legs.

“Regardless of whether there was an awareness of high radioactivity in the stagnant water, there were problems in the way work was conducted,” said agency spokesman Hidehiko Nishiyama.

The government’s criticisms came as workers at the plant struggled to stop increasing radioactivity and remove dangerously contaminated water from the facility, which has been leaking radiation due to massive quake and tsunami that crippled plant’s key cooling systems. (ANI)
