Japan quake toll rises to over 7,300 (Lead)

Tokyo, March 19 (IANS) The toll in the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan has gone up to 7,320 people, a police report here said Saturday.

The National Police Agency said that by 3.00 p.m. (0600 GMT) Saturday, at least 11,370 people were still unaccounted for across the coastal regions of the country, according to Xinhua.

On Saturday, another earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted the east coast of Honshu at 10.22 a.m. (0122 GMT), the US Geological Survey said. There were no reports of casualties or tsunami alert.

A record 262 aftershocks of magnitude-5 or greater have been registered in the seven days following the March 11, magnitude-9 earthquake, Kyodo News reported citing the Japan Meteorological Agency.

There were three aftershocks of magnitude-7 or greater and 49 aftershocks of magnitude-6 or more, it said.
