Japan invites Pakistan for conference on Afghanistan

Islamabad, Jan 17 (IANS) Japan has invited Pakistan for a conference on Afghanistan to be held in Tokyo this July.

The invitation was extended by Japan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and
Pakistan Tadamichi Yamamoto Monday while calling on Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, Online news agency reported.

Apprising Rabbani on the preparation being made for the Tokyo conference, Yamamoto stressed upon the importance of Pakistan for peace and stability in Afghanistan and invited the country to participate in this conference.

Ambassador Yamamoto lauded Pakistan’s efforts for reconstruction and development of
Afghanistan and offered to assist Pakistan in various fields including energy and
education sectors.

Khar appreciated Japan’s understanding of the complexity of the situation and its substantial contribution to development projects in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

She stressed that Pakistan was directly affected by the situation in
Afghanistan and therefore, had an abiding interest in stability in that country.

She said that Pakistan would be supportive of any political solution for peace in
Afghanistan that is Afghan-led and Afghan-owned.

Pakistan had boycotted an international conference on future of Afghanistan held in
German City of Bonn last December following NATO strikes and killing of 24 Pakistani soldiers.
