London, Mar 12 (ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has called Jamie Carragher’s tackle of Nani during last week’s 3-1 defeat at Liverpool as “disgraceful”.
Ferguson, who spoke to the media for the first time after being charged with improper conduct by the Football Association for comments against referee Martin Atkinson, admitted that Nani was unlikely to return until early next month as a result of the injury sustained during the 3-1 defeat at Anfield last Sunday.
The United winger will miss up to three weeks after requiring stitches to repair the leg wound inflicted by Carragher’s first-half challenge, The Telegraph reports.
“Obviously it was a disgraceful tackle, we know that, but you just move on. The wound was too wide to stitch,” Ferguson said.
“We sent him to hospital to see what they could do, and our own doctor and the surgeon there managed to get it stitched up, which was fantastic, the best news we could have got. The alternative would have been to wait and just let it heal,” he added.
He further said that concerns about infection still remained, and that an exact date ofor Nani’s return would have to wait.
Ferguson is likely to restore Gabriel Obertan in the team to avoid a third straight defeat for the first time in nine years. (ANI)
