Italy’s Rosetti to referee Euro finalJune 23rd, 2008 - 10:31 pm ICT by IANS
Vienna, June 23 (DPA) Roberto Rosetti of Italy is the referee for Sunday’s Euro 2008 final, Europe’s governing body UEFA announced Monday. UEFA also said that Swiss referee Massimo Busacca would officiate at Wednesday’s semi-final clash between Germany and Turkey, while Belgium’s Frank de Bleeckere is in charge of Spain and Russia Thursday.
Rosetti benefited from Italy’s penalty shoot-out defeat in the quarter-final against Spain Sunday, as a new UEFA ruling meant that the referee for the final was announced before the semi-finals, ruling out any officials from teams participating in the round of the last four.
It will be the first final for the 40-year-old Rosetti, who lives in Turin and has been a FIFA referee since 2002.
The Director of a hospital, who enjoys playing tennis and reading, has previously officiated at the 2005 Confederations Cup and the 2006 World Cup, as well as international youth competitions.
He handled the opening Euro game between Switzerland and the Czech Republic, as well as the group match Greece vs Russia and the quarter-final Turkey vs Croatia.
