Israelis bombed Syrian ‘nuclear facility site’ in 2007: IAEA
April 29th, 2011 - 5:25 pm ICT by ANIParis, Apr 29(ANI): The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Yukiya Amano has said that a target destroyed by Israeli warplanes in the Syrian desert in 2007 was the covert site of a future nuclear reactor.
Amano spoke during a Paris news conference meant to focus on Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster.
“The facility that was destroyed by Israel was a nuclear reactor under construction,” the Scotsman quoted Amano, as saying.
“It was a reactor under construction,” he added.
Israel has never publicly commented on the strike or even acknowledged carrying it out, while Syria denies allegations of any covert nuclear activity or interest in developing nuclear arms.
However, the US has shared intelligence with the IAEA that identifies the structure as a nearly completed nuclear reactor that, if finished, would have been able to produce plutonium for the fissile core of nuclear warheads. (ANI)
