Israel threatens ‘military action’ against Iran if it disobeys sanctions on nuke programme
March 19th, 2011 - 2:22 pm ICT by ANIJerusalem, Mar 19 (ANI): Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned of ‘military action’ if Iran continues with its nuclear programme by disobeying international sanctions, following reports that a cargo ship heading towards Tehran with weapons equipment was intercepted by Malaysian police earlier this month.
The Daily Mail quoted Netanyahu as saying that world leaders must make it clear that Iran would face “credible military action” if it disobeys sanctions to put an end to the country’s disputed nuclear program.
His warning comes as Malaysian police found equipment they suspect could be used to make nuclear weapons smuggled on board a ship headed to Iran.
Insisting that Iran was pursuing its nuclear ambitions despite international sanctions, Netanyahu said that Tehran possesses enough material for almost three nuclear bombs.
“They have enriched enough material now almost for three nuclear bombs. They still have to re-enrich it again but that is what they are doing. The only thing that will work is if Iran knew that if sanctions fail there will be a credible military option,” the paper quoted Netanyahu, as saying.
Meanwhile, National police chief Ismail Omar said that two containers were seized from a Malaysian-registered ship travelling from China to Iran, while it was docked at a central Malaysia harbour earlier this month, the paper said.
Authorities are reportedly investigating whether the equipment could be used to make nuclear weapons.
Recommending that the US should lead a military strike against Iran if the decision was taken, Netanyahu said: “This is not just our problem. This is the problem of Europe, and the United States”. (ANI)
