Israel showcases military might on 60th anniversaryMay 8th, 2008 - 7:43 pm ICT by admin
Tel Aviv, May 8 (Xinhua) Israel highlighted its 60th anniversary of independence Thursday with the Israeli armed forces showcasing its military might off this coastal city. The celebrations started Wednesday night with a ceremony commemorating the country’s fallen soldiers at Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl where the military cemetery is located.
Addressing the ceremony, Israeli Knesset (parliament) Speaker Dalia Itzik reached out to Arab leaders by saying: “We seek peace and we desire peace for your children as well, but beware - our children know very well the art of war if it is required.”
Six decades after it came into being in May 1948 on the ashes of the Holocaust, Israel is still plagued by threats from abroad and an identity crisis at home, according to local media.
Israel at 60 is a paradox of exuberance and despair - a country suffering from near daily rocket attacks from Gaza militants while producing scientists who have pioneered Wi-Fi and instant messaging, said the report.
