Israel retaliates for rocket attack with air strikes on Gaza strip
July 31st, 2010 - 1:16 pm ICT by ANILondon, July 31 (ANI): Israel has launched air strikes on targets in the Gaza Strip after a rocket fired from Palestinian territory exploded in an Israeli town ‘Ashkelon’, the first such attack in more than a year.
According to Sky News, late Friday, the air strikes hit a training camp used by the terrorist group Hamas and hit smuggling tunnels along Gaza’s border with Egypt.
Palestinian medical workers have confirmed that four people were injured in the attack.
Earlier, the Palestinian rocket had blown out the windows of an apartment block and damaged parked cars in a residential area of the town of Ashkelon.
That attack caused no casualties but damaged a building and cars in the city, 12km (7 miles) north of Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier said he took the rocket attack on Ashkelon - which has a population of 125,000 - “very seriously”.
“Israel takes the firing on Ashkelon very seriously, hundreds of people live here. It’s just luck that no one was killed,” he said then. (ANI)
