Iranian nuclear scientist killed in car bombing
January 11th, 2012 - 3:37 pm ICT by IANSTehran, Jan 11 (IANS) A car bombing in Tehran killed a nuclear scientist Wednesday, the latest in a string of attacks against such scientists in Iran, media reports said.
A motorcyclist placed the bomb under Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan’s car, according to Iran’s Fars news agency.
Wednesday’s blast took place at a faculty of Iran’s Allameh Tabatai university near Gol Nabi Street. Two others were also injured in the blast, which took place in the north of the capital, BBC reported.
Ahmadi Roshan, 32, was a graduate of oil industry university and supervised a department at Natanz uranium enrichment facility in Isfahan province, said Fars.
The attack followed a pattern that killed nuclear scientists in the country in the past.
In July last year, nuclear physicist Daryoush Rezaie was killed in an attack in front of his Tehran house by assailants on a motorcycle.
In November 2010, Majid Shahriari, a member of the nuclear engineering faculty at Shahid Beheshti University, was killed in Tehran in a bomb blast. The bomb was attached to his car by a motorcyclist.
Another scientist, Fereydoon Abbasi Davani, later head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, was injured in an attack.
In January 2010, Massoud Ali Mohammadi, a physics professor, died when a motorcycle fitted with explosives exploded near his car.
Iran’s controversial nuclear programme has been the subject of global concern. The US and other Western countries fear Iran wants to develop nuclear weapons, an allegation denied by Tehran which says the technology was for peaceful purposes.
