Iranian candy thief to lose his hand as a punishment
October 19th, 2010 - 8:45 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattTehran, Oct 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Reports in the Iranian media on Saturday indicated that a man who attacked and robbed a candy shop has been convicted by a court and his hand will be amputated as punishment for the crime.
The news which was reported by the Fars news agency revealed that the leading judge in one of the courts located in the Iranian capital also sentenced the anonymous man to a 1 year jail term and he is also supposed to replace the items, which he stole.
The Islamic nation has been in the news recently after the hand of a thief was amputated after being convicted in Mashhad, located in the northeastern part of the country.
Even though the country’s judiciary operates by following the Islamic law, punishments like amputations are not normally carried out even after a sentence.
The reason why most punishments given in Iranian courts are stern is because authorities want to create an organized and honest society for the nation. Many people in the western world however believe that punishments such as stoning, amputations, etc. are painting a bad image of Iran in particular and the religion of Islam in general.
Currently, the international community is fighting to get a reprieve for an Iranian woman sentenced to death through stoning because of adultery.
