Iran to hold war games
December 14th, 2011 - 6:39 am ICT by IANSTehran, Dec 14 (IANS) Iran will hold naval war games in the Strait of Hormuz, Xinhua reported Tuesday.
It is to test Iran’s ability to close the strait in the near future, said member of Majlis, Parviz Sorouri.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important passage for oil shipments from the Persian Gulf region.
The Middle East supplies 70 percent of the world’s energy needs, most of which are transported through Hormuz.
“We will hold an exercise for closing the Strait of Hormuz in the near future. If the world wants to make the region insecure, we will make the world insecure,” the Mehr news agency quoted Sorouri as saying.
Iran’s threat to close the passage comes amid new threats of sanctions from the west over its oil exports.
