Iran summons British envoy over help for rebel group
June 17th, 2010 - 4:11 am ICT by IANSTehran, June 17 (IANS) Iran Wednesday summoned the British ambassador to Tehran over London’s alleged support for a rebel group blamed for several terror attacks in the country, the Iranian state-run Press TV reported.
The British government is accused of having links with the militant group Mujahedin Khalq Organisation (MKO).
The alleged link came to light after two members of the group were recently arrested, the report said.
This prompted the Iranian foreign ministry to summon British Ambassador to Tehran Simon Gass to give an explanation.
“The Iranian foreign ministry expects the British government to take this matter seriously and provide an explanation as soon as possible,” the ministry said in a statement.
The MKO is a Marxist guerilla group founded in the 1960s. It is blamed for several attacks in the country, including the bombings of the Islamic Republic Party offices in 1981, in which over 72 people were killed.
