Iran starts uranium enrichment at new n-plant
January 9th, 2012 - 12:51 am ICT by IANSTehran, Jan 8 (IANS) Iran has begun enriching uranium at its new nuclear plant near the Qom city, Xinhua reported Sunday.The Fordo enrichment facility will start operating soon, the Kayhan daily quoted Fereidoon Abbasi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, as saying.
It will be able to produce 20 percent, 3.5 percent and 4 percent enriched uranium, Abbasi said at an exhibition showcasing Iran’s nuclear achievements in the port city of Bandar Abbas in the southern province of Hormozgan.
The West suspects the uranium enrichment may be meant for producing nuclear weapons. Iran has denied the claims, saying it is meant for producing electricity.
