Iran Says That It Will Not Stone A Widow For Infidelity

July 9, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The Iranian government has enunciated that it will not stone to death a 43-year-old widow, Sakineh Ashtiani, for the perpetration of infidelity. However, what is ambiguous at this stage is whether Iran has annulled the death sentence against Sakineh or whether she will be liquidated via another means.
Ashtiani was convicted by the Iranian judiciary in 2006 for being involved in an unlawful relationship outside matrimony with two males. She was awarded the sentence of 99 lashes. Her case was begun again subsequent to the development of suspicion in the court. The court suspected that Ashtiani had exterminated her husband. However, the murder case gave rise to the exoneration of Ashtiani eventually. Nonetheless, she was bequeathed the capital punishment on the charge of infidelity. This capital punishment for infidelity was delivered anchored in a judge’s comprehension.
The news of the probability of Ashtiani encountering the medieval penalization of stoning to death shocked the international community. Prominent human rights organizations began to apply pressure on the Iranian authorities to nullify her stoning to death.
However, in a new development, a proclamation discharged by the Iranian embassy in London has repudiated the reports that Ashtiani was ever scheduled to endure death by stoning. He has stated that such reports in the global media were wholly inaccurate and false.
The British Government has articulated its standpoint that, if Ashtiani is stoned to death, it will be an event that will horrify the world and generate international revulsion for Iran.
The luminaries, who have given their endorsement to the movement for Ashtiani’s discharge, consist of Sir David Hare, an eminent dramatist; Emma Thompson and Juliette Binoche, who are two accomplished actresses; fashion designer, Katherine Hamnett, and actor Colin Firth.
Under Iran’s severe Islamic regulations, infidelity is the only capital crime liable to be punished by stoning. A male is generally interred up to his waist, while a female is interred up to her neck. Those implementing the pronouncement of stoning then bombard the convict with stones until he or she passes away.
The Guardian has, meanwhile, asserted that 12 Iranian females and 3 Iranian males incarcerated there are expected to encounter death by stoning. Their crime was that they were, allegedly, perpetrators of marital disloyalty.
