Iran optimistic about IAEA visit
January 30th, 2012 - 8:01 am ICT by IANSAddis Ababa, Jan 30 (IANS) Tehran is optimistic about the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s visit to the country and the country is ready to reply to any concerns raised by it, said Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi Sunday.
“We will eventually show that Iran is a faithful member of the IAEA and shall remain so and that our nuclear activities are transparent,” Xinhua reported Salehi as telling reporters on the sidelines of the ongoing 18th African Union summit being held here.
“There is nothing obscure in our nuclear activities. We have proved this for the past 10 years.”
A high-ranking IAEA delegation arrived in Iran Sunday and will pay a visit to Iranian nuclear facilities.
The IAEA visit has come amid strong sanctions by the US and possible sanctions from the European Union as they try to convince Iran to give up its nuclear programme that they claim is being used to develop arms.
Iran maintains that it is enriching uranium to generate electricity.
Salehi said that instead of western powers tightening their sanctions on Iran, they should resort to negotiations.
