Iran launches biggest air defence drill
November 16th, 2010 - 10:20 pm ICT by IANSTehran, Nov 16 (IANS) The Iranian Army Tuesday launched its biggest nationwide air defence drill to prepare against any possible attacks “on public or nuclear sites” in the country, the state-run Press TV reported.
Arial defence units from the army and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) are taking part in the three-stage five-day defence manoeuvers dubbed “Modafean Aseman Velayat 3″, (the Guardians of Islamic Skies).
The air manoeuvers are being held near Iran’s “nuclear and vital landmarks” and include tests of long-range anti-air missiles.
The drills aim to enhance response capabilities in countering threats against the county’s vital landmarks. Iran has held several major defence drills in the recent months.
Western countries have accused Iran of trying to build atomic weapons in the garb of its civilian nuclear energy programme, but Tehran has denied the charges.
