Iran launches 10-day naval exercise
December 24th, 2011 - 9:13 pm ICT by IANSTehran, Dec 24 (IANS) Iran Saturday launched a massive 10-day naval exercise in international waters, the official media reported.
The manoeuvres, dubbed Velayat 90, will be held in a 2,000 km stretch of sea off the southern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, from the Strait of Hormuz, into the Gulf of Aden, near the entrance to the Red Sea, Xinhua reported quoting the Press TV.
Submarines, including Tareq and Ghadir classes, the latest ground-to-sea missiles and torpedoes are deployed.
This is the first time that the Iranian Navy is carrying out naval exercises in such a vast area, Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari told a press conference Thursday.
He said the exercise will showcase Iran’s military prowess and defence capabilities in the international waters.
