Iran holds first trial of ‘CIA agent’
December 29th, 2011 - 3:31 am ICT by IANSTehran, Dec 29 (IANS) Iran has held the first trial session of Amir Mirza Hekmati, who was arrested on charges of spying for the CIA, a media report said Wednesday.
An indictment read out at the session Tuesday said that Hekmati entered Iran with the aim of penetrating the Iranian intelligence apparatus, Xinhua reported quoting Tehran Times. His aim was to take measures to implicate Iran in terrorist actions, the newspaper further said.
The indictment stated Hekmati was recruited by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 2009 and had been assigned to carry out espionage missions in Iran.
Iranian intelligence ministry announced Dec 17 that it had arrested Hekmati and identified him as a CIA spy.
In his confession broadcast by Iran’s Press TV Dec 18, Hekmati said he had links with the CIA and had intended to act against Iran’s national security.
After the indictment was read out, Hekmati defended himself by saying that he was “deceived” into becoming a spy.
