Iran hangs woman for murdering football hubby’s first wife
December 1st, 2010 - 6:00 pm ICT by ANITehran, Dec 1(ANI): An Iranian woman convicted of murdering the first wife of her football player husband was hanged in Iran today.
According to News.com.au, Shahla Jahed was hanged at Tehran’s Evin prison after the Supreme Court and the judiciary chief confirmed the verdict.
Jahed, who had been living with footballer Nasser Mohammadkhani in Tehran under a temporary marriage, was found guilty of stabbing to death his first wife, Laleh Saharkhizan, in 2002.
She first confessed to the murder, but then retracted the statement in court.
The 40-year-old was convicted of murder in 2004 and again in 2009, after her appeal was denied.
Earlier, human rights group Amnesty International had called on Iran to halt Jahed’s execution, saying that “there are good reasons to suggest that she may have been wrongly convicted”.
In the Shiite faith, which is the majority religion in Iran, men and women can marry for an agreed period of time. Afterwards, the marriage is null and void, although it can be renewed.
Men can have up to four permanent wives, and any number of temporary wives. Women can only be married to one man at a time. (ANI)
