Iran denies launching missile in Persian Gulf
January 1st, 2012 - 8:33 am ICT by IANSMoscow, Jan 1 (IANS/RIA Novosti) A high-ranking Iranian Navy official has denied the country test-launched a wide-range missile during ongoing sea exercises in the Persian Gulf, saying that the launch was postponed, Iranian news agencies reported.
Earlier Saturday, the Fars news agency in Iran reported the Navy had launched a live missile in a zone of some 2,000 square km in international waters between the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.
“A rocket launch will be held in the next few days,” Press TV quoted Rear Admiral Mahmoud Mousavi as saying.
The reason behind the launch’s postponment, however, remained unclear.
Iran has been holding naval exercises in the area since Dec 24 and they are to continue for 10 days.
