It ought to be mentioned that some human rights activists had said to the media that the hapless woman had been released by Iran.
Iran’s official news channel Press TV’s website clarified the matter and said that the report that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani had been released is not true at all. The website also added that the rumor was a “vast publicity campaign by Western media.”
A support group of 43 years old Sakineh had spread the news that she has been freed. “We have got news from Iran that they are free,” according to Mina Ahadi, who is a spokeswoman for the International Campaign Against Stoning. This news had sent a wave of appreciation for Iran all over the world. Many top ministers of the foreign governments had said that it was a welcome gesture on Iran’s part.
Maureen Harper, who is the wife of the Canadian prime minister, had also issued a statement in which she said that she was overjoyed with the news. And Italy’s Foreign Minister Franco Frattini had also issued a statement in which he had welcomed this gesture.
