Iran decries G8 statement as interfering, hasty
June 27th, 2009 - 8:51 pm ICT by IANSTehran, June 27 (DPA) Iran Saturday decried a G8 statement on its presidential election as interfering and hasty, ISNA news agency reported.
“The G8 statement was interfering and hasty, although the presidential election in Iran was held in a totally legal, free and competitive atmosphere,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hassan Ghashghavi said.
The foreign ministers of the world’s most powerful developed economies Friday urged Iran to end the turmoil that followed its June 12 elections peacefully. They gave Iran until September to return to direct talks on its nuclear programme.
The spokesman said that the 85-percent turnout in the June 12 election was a turning point in Iran’s religious democracy. He further noted that such a turnout was unheard of in Western countries, despite their claims of democracy.
Ghashghavis said that the G8 foreign ministers should have dealt with real world problems.
Referring to a scheduled visit of European Parliament members to Iran, the spokesman said that the visit would not help in improving bilateral ties if the European representatives did not respect Iran’s agenda and if their aim was renewed interference in Iran’s internal matters.
