Inspector fired from job for miniature train derailment
March 23rd, 2011 - 7:41 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattSpartanburg, Mar 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A safety inspector has been fired from his job after he admitted that he failed to check a miniature train’s engine speed leading to derailment and the subsequent death of a six-year-old boy. The incident happened on Saturday at the Cleveland Park in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The police though have admitted that they do not as yet know what caused the derailment. The incident resulted in injury to about 19 other people. Police suspect that the derailment might have been caused by the fact that the train’s operator was speeding too much. The train’s operator admitted to the police that he was over-speeding when the incident happened.
What the police believe is not the cause of the accident is sabotage. There has been public rumor that the incident was as a result of sabotage. Spartanburg Police Captain Art Littlejohn assured that they would get to the root of the cause.
Littlejohn said that, “We’ve got to talk to a lot of people. We are currently reviewing all reports, statements, 911 recordings and an amateur video.”
The dead child has been identified as Benjamin Easler. A memorial was held for the boy on Tuesday night. His parents were also injured in the accident.
