Indonesian prosecutors seek 20-year jail for prison warden
December 29th, 2011 - 9:06 am ICT by IANSJakarta, Dec 29 (IANS/AKI) In a rare late-night trial session, prosecutors demanded that a former warden at Indonesia’s Alcatraz prison be sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for protecting a drug ring inside his prison.
Prosecutor Eko Bambang asked the Cilacap District Court to sentence the defendant, Marwan Adli, who was relieved as warden of the Narcotics Penitentiary on Nusakambangan island, to 20 years’ imprisonment for violating the law, tempo.co reported.
At a hearing that began at 9.30 p.m. Tuesday and did not end until midnight, prosecutors alleged that Marwan aided a drug trafficking ring inside the prison in Cilacap, Central Java, run by inmate Hartoni Jaya Buana, a big-time drug dealer with Latin American connections.
Marwan gave Hartoni a cell phone, laundered money and gave Hartoni other assistance, prosecutors said.
The defendant denied the allegations.
