Jakarta, Mar.11 (ANI): Indonasia has rejected leaked US diplomatic cables accusing President Susilo Bambong Yudhoyono of bribery, intimidation and using his position for self-enrichment.

US diplomatic cables, which were obtained by WikiLeaks and given to Australia’s Fairfax Media and later printed in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age newspapers say that Yudhoyono was trying to influence judges and prosecutors to protect his own corrupt political allies.

The cables also said he used the country’s intelligence service to spy on his rivals and that his family was trying to use his political connections for their own financial gains, News.com.au reports.

Responding to the leaked diplomatic cables, Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said that the claims “had no foundation in fact.”

Yudhoyono had become the country’s first directly elected leader in 2004. His victory was largely based on a campaign to root out entrenched corruption and nepotism following the 32-year dictatorship of General Suharto.

Although he has been credited with bringing political stability and economic reforms to country, many problems like widespread graft, poverty and problems related to infrastructure still remain. (ANI)
