Toronto, May 4 (ANI) Indo-Canadian MPs, including Ujjal Dosanjh and Ruby Dhalla, have been defeated in Canadian federal election, which was held on Monday.

Former Canadian Health Minister Dosanjh lost to Wai Young by over 1,000 votes in Vancouver South.

Born in Punjab’s Jalandhar district, the 63-year-old had emigrated to the United Kingdom at the age of 17 before moving to Canada four years later.

He had served as the Canadian Health Minister from July 2004 to February 2006.

Ruby Dhalla, who became the first Sikh woman MP in Canada in 2004, was defeated by fellow Indo-Canadian Parm Gill in Brampton-Springdale by 7,000 votes.

The election returned the ruling Conservative Party to power, as they won 167 seats in the 308-member House of Commons.

The New Democratic Party won the largest number of seats in their history, including a large majority of seats in Quebec (where they had previously only ever elected two candidates) and will form the Official Opposition for the first time.

This will be the strongest opposition in terms of share of opposition seats since the 1993 election.

The Liberal Party won the fewest seats in their history and party leader Michael Ignatieff was defeated in his own riding.

The Bloc Quebecois, which had always won at least a majority of seats in Quebec in every election of their existence, lost nearly all their seats, and thus also their official party status, including the seat of their leader Gilles Duceppe, who resigned as BQ leader following his defeat.

The Green Party won their first elected seat, that of party leader Elizabeth May. (ANI)
