Indian woman kills herself in Nepal
July 27th, 2011 - 2:10 pm ICT by IANSKathmandu, July 27 (IANS) A 22-year-old woman from India’s Kolkata city killed herself in Nepal after prolonged domestic disturbance, police said.
Married four years ago, Sunita Chakraborty came to Mechi town in eastern Nepal’s Jhapa district, close to the Indian border, with her husband, 28-year-old Rajeev Chakraborty, who worked as a construction labourer, deputy police superintendent Bidyananda Negi told IANS.
The official said the couple had come to Nepal only six months ago.
Police sources said neighbours had confirmed that the husband was in the habit of returning home drunk and picking up a fight with his wife, which at time led to his hitting her as well.
On Monday, after another bout of quarrelling, the frustrated 22-year-old waited till her husband had fallen asleep, then poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze.
Police said when the husband woke up, he tried his best to douse the fire and his shouts for help brought neighbours to their rented room, trying to help save the young wife.
However, she was wearing synthetic clothes and was badly burnt. While being taken to hospital, she died on the way.
Police said before her death, she had told the neighbours that she had set herself on fire deliberately because she was convinced that her husband did not care for her any more.
