Indian Studies Department of Malay university involved in another scandal
August 5th, 2009 - 6:31 pm ICT by ANIPetaling Jaya (Malaysia), Aug 5 (ANI): The Indian Studies Department of the University of Malaya (UM), which was tangled in a leadership crisis recently, has been involved in another scandal.
In an investigation by the Literature and Social Science Faculty dean, it has found misconduct in the marking of PhD thesis papers and awarding several students undeserving first class honours degrees.
“The issue is something that could not be accepted,” The Star quoted Professor Ghauth Jasmon, the university vice-chancellor, as saying.
Jasmon reported the matter to Malaysia’s Higher Education Minister.
“This has happened for a long time and it seems the faculty is not capable of correcting it,” Jasmon has written in his report.
“After assessing the situation of the department, I have made a conclusion that this department, with its current leadership, is not capable of correcting this unacceptable situation,” Jasmon adds.
He also said that investigation had revealed that the examiners were from two universities in India, and that one of the examiners was forced to complete his report in three days.
Jasmon has suggested a re-checking of the thesis papers. (ANI)
